With over 100 years of combined tax experience, Obsidian has assembled a formidable team of tax professionals whose vast experience in both personal and corporate tax allows them to see the bigger picture.
Tom is a tax professional with over 29 years' experience. His main strengths encompass technical skills as well as the ability to communicate well with people in all spheres of life. This means he likes to get to grips with the finer detail of more complex legislation. At the same time Tom enjoys meeting clients, presenting, training and coaching. Tom advises entrepreneurs and their businesses on all tax-related matters in the UK as well as further abroad.
Tom graduated in modern languages (French and Russian) and started his career as a fast-stream civil servant working in a team advising Treasury ministers on matters relating to the Chancellor’s Budget. He moved into practice with Grant Thornton in 1990, where he qualified as a Chartered Tax Adviser (CTA) and has held various positions with different firms (including PwC and as a partner with both Duncan and Toplis and Haines Watts) and has worked independently. His career has been spent entirely in the field of tax.
Experience has taught Tom that most problems can be solved with a combination of technical expertise and an element of creativity or lateral thinking. It has also taught him that collaboration is more powerful than competition. In addition to his own expertise, Tom has access to a wide network that he has built over the years comprising barristers (mainly tax counsel), lawyers, accountants, specialists in niche areas (transfer pricing, R&D, capital allowances and others) valuation experts and other relevant professionals, as well as people within HMRC.
Faisal is one of the founders of Obsidian Tax and has enjoyed over 10 years' experience in the tax sector. His main strength is to swiftly understand the commercial and tax issues faced by high net worth individuals and corporate clients and to identify solutions that can add real value.
Supported by his team of skilled chartered tax advisors and a strong professional network, Faisal has a successful track record in delivering high level solutions to complicated problems.
Faisal brings significant entrepreneurial spirit to Obsidian, through his business interests in coffee shops, property development and health clubs. This exposure allows him to better understand the needs of entrepreneurs. Faisal also acts as an external advisor to the University of Leicester School of Business and is the Entrepreneur in Residence to the University of Leicester.
His vision for Obsidian is very clear; he wants Obsidian to be the specialist tax advisory practice of choice for small to mid-tier accountancy firms.
Lucas has spent his entire professional career experience advising high net worth individuals, entrepreneurs, and privately owned businesses, on how they can achieve the optimum structure for their business interests and investments, as well as how they plan for future succession.
Before joining Obsidian, Lucas spent 23 years at PricewaterhouseCoopers, at offices in both the Midlands and London, training as a chartered tax advisor and developing his deep technical knowledge. He has worked with a broad range of clients ranging from some of the wealthiest families in the UK to entrepreneurs who are just starting out, helping them achieve their commercial goals in a tax efficient manner.
He particularly enjoys solving complex problems for private clients and their businesses, and is acutely aware of the importance of both advising on the interaction of corporate and personal taxes to ensure the wider implications are taken into account and on the need to be sensitive to the personal and family issues involved, in order to provide valuable advice for his clients.
Whether just starting out in business, changing how a business or investments are structured or owned, providing for employee incentives, considering acquisitions or disposals, or longer term family succession issues, Lucas is able to design and implement business and investment structures for his clients which require a high degree of technical input and coordination by providing bespoke solutions to their commercial and tax issues across all areas.
